Alba Fernández is a Spanish entrepreneur who works with her hands to explore various worlds using fabric as her guide. Reflexión es plantearte como haces las cosas, para qué, por qué y de que manera las haces. Creo que es positivo reflexionar continuamente y reformularte nuevos retos y maneras de actuar.
Reflection is deciding how to do things, to what end, why, and how you go about doing them. I believe it’s positive to continually reflect, set new goals, and act in new ways.

Para empezar con algunos puntos básicas, de dónde vienes? Dónde estás?
Leading off with some basics, where are you from? And where are you at?
AF: Soy de Madrid y actualmente vivo aquí, aun que por temporadas, llevo unos cuantos años pasando temporadas en diferentes lugares por motivos de trabajo.
AF: I’m from, and currently live in, Madrid, though I’ve also lived in a few other places for work reasons over the years.
Que quiere decir “reflexión,” y “respuesta,” para ti?
What does Reflection and Response mean to you?
AF: Reflexión es plantearte como haces las cosas, para qué, por qué y de que manera las haces. Creo que es positivo reflexionar continuamente y reformularte nuevos retos y maneras de actuar.
Respuesta: Se supone que la respuesta, es la consecuencia directa de la reflexión, pero en mi caso, muchas veces la respuesta sale sola, sin pensar, de manera impulsiva. Luego te toca reflexionar sobre la respuesta.
AF: Reflection is deciding how to do things, to what end, why, and how you go about doing them. I believe it’s positive to continually reflect, set new goals, and act in new ways.
Response should be the direct response that comes from Reflection, but for me many times Response happens on it’s own, impulsively, without thinking. Then, it’s time to Reflect about that Response.
Cómo se mete tu arte en esta definición?
How does your work fit in with that definition?
AF: Bueno las cosas que yo hago artesanalmente, en parte tienen una reflexión previa de cara a nuevas formas, nuevos materiales, replantear cosas ya hechas que funcionan, se venden bien. Adaptarte a los gustos del momento, investigar nuevas técnicas…
Como respuesta, vería el producto ya acabado, las creaciones, el feed back de la gente cuando ve tu artesanía y te da su opinión. La manera de venderla. También te cambia mucho el concepto como compradora en tu vida diaria, cuando tu inviertes tu tiempo y esfuerzo en hacer artesanía, te vuelves más crítica con los productos de los demás, los valoras de un modo más positivo, ya que entiendes el trabajo que lleva hacerlos. Por el contrario, las cosas que no son elaboradas artesanalmente, pierden mucho valor para tí y dejas de pagar por ellas las cantidades que antes podrías pagar.
AF: The artisan handicrafts I work on involve initial reflections on new forms [of objects], new materials and repeating previous ideas that were successful and that sold well. [Also, Reflection and Response includes] adapting to current tastes and trends and researching new techniques.
I would say Response [is activated] when I receive feedback and opinions from people about my finished products. [Response is also important] when looking at sales. Producing artisan goods can change one’s thinking when making purchases throughout daily life; you can become [more interested] in others’ pieces when [you yourself] are investing time and energy in creating crafts, [which leads to a greater] understanding the time and effort that goes into craftsmanship. On the other hand, pieces that are not made through complex craft processes are less valuable to you and you find yourself paying less for them than you might have before.
Que más estás haciendo actualmente? Que proyectos estás pensando trabajar próximamente?
What else have you been working on recently? What are you looking to work on next?
AF: En estos momentos y tras una buena Navidad de ventas, sigo trabajando los complementos de invierno. Quiero aguantar hasta que se pase el frío, que en Madrid está haciendo mucho, para seguir tejiendo. Ahora tengo un par de Ferias de Artesanía importantes donde quiero vender estos productos, pero una ves las acabe, quiero cambiar. Por un lado, de cara al invierno que viene, quiero seguir con los tejidos de punto pero empezar a hacer nuevos complementos.
Y de cara al verano, he empezado poco a poco a hacer macramé. El macramé me parece un mundo abierto de posibilidades, puedes hacer lo que quieras, es muy elegante si lo combinas bien y me resulta muy gratificante. Lo descubrí hace poco, y me ha encantado, pero hasta que no acabe el invierno, no puedo meterme de lleno en eso.
También quiero aprender corte y confección, esa es mi nueva meta, para diseñar y crear ropa.
AF: I’m currently working on winter accessories, [which I’ve been working on] since the recent busy holiday season. I’d like to wait to start knitting again until the cold weather passes. I’m scheduled to be part of a few important upcoming craft fairs during which I’d like to sell these [winter] products, and once these are sold out, I’m looking forward to [working on new crafts]. On the one hand, I’d like to keep working with knits while also starting to make some new accessories.
I’ve begun to work on knotwork in preparation for the summer. Knotwork represents a world of possibilities [in which] one can do what he/she wishes, and can be quite elegant if knit correctly, [a process] that can be extremely gratifying. I’ve only learned about knotwork recently; I’ve learned to love the craft, though I can’t fully commit to it until the end of winter. My new goal is to learn dressmaking, and to design and crate clothing.
Quien o que te inspira?
Who or what inspires you?
AF: Pues esta pregunta es difícil, me lo he planteado varias veces, pero no tengo una fuente de inspiración concreta. Podría decir que me inspira es estar agusto en algún lugar, con música de fondo y frío en la calle para tejer.
Y bueno, ver las lanas tiradas por todo mi salón, me inspira a tejerlas para no tenerlas por el medio.
AF: This is a hard question that I’ve asked myself several times, but I haven’t found a solid source of inspiration. I would say [I get inspired to knit when] I’m at ease somewhere, with music in the background and cold weather outside. And well, [it’s also inspiring] to see yarns scattered all over my studio; I’m inspired to knit [in order to] clean them up.
Hay algo más que quieres que sepa el Collectivo?
Is there anything else you would like the Collective to know?
AF: Animo a la gente a crear, es muy positivo trabajar con las manos y conseguir poco a poco mejorar y hacer cosas que antes pensabas que era imposible que las hicieras tu.
También que estoy intentando trabajar por encargo, he montado recientemente el blog y poco a poco me va funcionando, lo que busco es que practicamente todo mi trabajo de artesanía sea por encargo, ya que las ferias y mercados, no siempre son buenos, tienes que pagar una pasta y pasas frío y muchas horas allí.
¡¡Y ojala pudiera dedicarme a esto unicamnete, que fuera mi trabajo!!

AF: I encourage other people to create, [and I think] it’s very positive to work with your hands, improve [your craft] bit by bit, and [eventually] make things that you once thought were impossible to do.
Also I started the blog recently because I want to start working on orders; it’s coming together slowly and I hope to shift almost all of my craftwork to orders because craft fairs and markets aren’t always good [experiences]. They’re expensive and it’s rather cold outside for the long hours you work.
I hope to be able to dedicate my life to [my craft] and make it my occupation!!
