Feature: Jaime Echagüe

Gente! Es otro viernes y aqui en la serie de Features estamos muy entusiasmado de dar el bienvenido a una nueva voz. Jaime Echagüe nació en Madrid y sigue viviendo una vida artistica muy activa. Ha sido parte de grupos como “Flamenco en el vagon,” como multi-instrumentalista. Abajo se encuentra pensamientos y su perspectiva unica de Reflección y Respuesta!

People! It’s another Friday here at the LIFESTYLE and we are excited to pass the mic to a new voice. Jaime Echagüe is from Madrid and continues to live an active artistic life in the city. He has been a part of various groups such as “Flamenco en el vagon,” as a multi-instrumentalist. Peep the dialogue below for his words and unique perspective on Reflection and Response!

Reflexión hablando de las personas para mí significa mirarse en uno mismo, adentro. Y además lo asocio con paciencia y planificación...Respuesta para mi es exteriorizar, pero hacerlo como “respuesta” a unos estímulos externos, y como siempre estamos recibiendo estímulos estamos en constante respuesta.

Speaking in terms of people, reflection means to look within oneself, and is also associated with patience and planning…Response is to externalize and to do so in “response” to some outside stimulant. Because we are constantly receiving these stimuli we find ourselves in perpetual response.

Para empezar con algunos puntos básicos, de dónde vienes? Dónde estás?


Leading off with some basics, where are you from? And where are you at?

JE: Soy originalmente del Madrid, he nacido en esta ciudad y me encanta. Lo anterior es en términos geográficos, pero cambiando de tercio y hablando de realidades personales estoy en un momento muy intenso de mi vida, tanto por lo que pasa alrededor como la gran energía y entusiasmo que tengo actualmente para hacer cosas. Cómo todos estoy buscando mi realización personal o acercarme a ella lo más posible, he hecho muchas cosas en la vida y me entusiasman muchas cosas, pero solo hay una cosa clara del todo La música para mí es muy importante y me acompañará toda mi vida, no dejaré de tocar nunca. No me cuesta asegurar esto pues es algo que me sale automático.

 JE: I am from Madrid, I was born here and I love the city. That’s in geographic terms. Speaking for myself, personally, I’m at an intense stage of my life because of what is going on around me and the great energy and enthusiasm I feel to make things happen. Like everyone, I am searching for personal meaning or at least to get as close to that as possible. While I have done many things in life and there are many things that interest me, only one thing remains clear above all. Music, for me, is very important and will accompany me all my life. I’ll never stop playing. This isn’t a difficult proclamation because it’s something I know to be true, something automatic.

Que quiere decir “reflexión,” y “respuesta,” para ti?

What does “Reflection” and “Response,” mean to you?

JE: Reflexión hablando de las personas para mí significa mirarse en uno mismo, adentro. Y además lo asocio con paciencia y planificación. Para mi dos de las habilidades y capacidades más importantes que puede tener una persona para acometer sus objetivos en la vida

Respuesta para mi es exteriorizar, pero hacerlo como “respuesta” a unos estímulos externos, y como siempre estamos recibiendo estímulos estamos en constante respuesta. Somos emisores de respuestas que producen estímulos a nuestro alrededor. Lo que lleva a la interacción y como hablamos de música diré que esta es una de las respuestas más grandes que se puede dar en el “canal” de los humanos (en el que nos vemos sintonizados y nos entendemos)

JE: Speaking in terms of people, reflection means to look within oneself, and is also associated with patience and planning. For me, these are the two most important qualities one can have in accomplishing goals in life.

Response is to externalize and to do so in “response” to some outside stimulant. Because we are constantly receiving these stimuli we find ourselves in perpetual response. We are human transmitters of response that in turn produce stimuli of our own in our surroundings. These responses make up interaction and music, which is one of the most important responses that come through human receptors (through which we recognize and understand each other).

Cómo se mete tu música en esta definición?

How does your music fit in with that definition?

JE: Lo he ido introduciendo un poco en las preguntas anteriores, la música es una forma de expresión y de comunicación con los demás, ahí se engloba la respuesta, que es inmediata. La reflexión no me es tan fácil encajarla en algo concreto, es más amplia, puede ser la reflexión durante el proceso creativo, tanto improvisando como en diferido.

JE: I have started introducing a few ideas in the previous questions. Music is a form of expression and of communication with others that demonstrates universal, immediate response. I find it harder to come up with a concrete idea of reflection; it is a broader concept, perhaps reflection takes place during the creative process, whether improvised or recorded.

Que más estás haciendo actualmente? Que proyectos estás pensando trabajar próximamente?

What else have you been working on recently? What are you looking to work on next?

JE: 
Mi actividad musical se centra en formarme, en técnica y armonía, para alcanzar la excelencia en mi sonido y técnica. Pero siempre dejo paso a la aventura, pues para levantar mi motivación necesito tocar, cuando no tenía nivel suficiente me defendía con la percusión y así conseguía estar metido en mundillo. Con todo esto lo que quiero decir es que sin tocar en público y otros músicos me aburriría y no me dedicaría a esto. Actualmente y aunque suene curioso estoy tocando en los vagones de metro flamenco de una cierta calidad con un cantor. Podéis escuchar algún tema nuestro grabado en:

 JE: I am currently working on improving my technique and playing ability. However, I am always up for a little adventure and before I felt comfortable playing woodwinds I would get by on percussion – which is how I was first able to get into the world of music. What’s important here is that I would get bored without playing in front of people or jamming with other musicians. Without this interaction I wouldn’t be a musician. Though it might sound strange, I am currently performing flamenco with a singer on subway trains in Madrid. Here is a song we’ve recorded:

Quien o que te inspira?

Who or what inspires you?

JE: Para en cuanto al saxofón me inspira el sonido de Stan Getz, el cual es sumamente peculiar. Y escuchar otra música, estoy escuchando mucho Nu Jazz pues me vuelven loco las rítmicas y el buen feeling que se consigue en esos temas. Es jazz para bailar, un toque de funk y buen rollo. También me vuelve loco la música de Nina Simone. Ahora mismo mi máxima sería sacar un proyecto en esa onda, tipo Saint Germain (muy recomendable), componer unas letras y hacer Nu Jazz con un poco de electrónica, mucho bajo y unas líneas de viento que hicieran moverse eróticamente a cualquiera . Ah y voz femenina…wow, eso sería genial¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

JE: In terms of the saxophone I find inspiration in the completely odd sound of Stan Getz. As for other music, I have also been listening to a lot of Nu Jazz; the intoxicating rhythm and groove drive me crazy. It’s Jazz that you can dance to with a touch of funk and good vibes. Nina Simone also drives me mad. Right now I would love to organize a similar project, perhaps something like Saint Germain (highly recommended). The idea would be to compose the lyrics and make Nu Jazz with a bit of electronica, a lot of bass, and some woodwind parts that would make anyone move erotically to the groove. Ah, and a female voice…wow, that would be sweet!!!!!!!!!

The Porch Swing: Character Series

Character Series: The Adventurs of SnakeMan Jones, by Samuel Bostick.

This is a new sort of writing experience and I feel like its off to a good start. This project actually originated as a collaboration piece with a student of mine who was often drawing these really fantastic monsters and such. I told him that I would write a story about the monsters he drew and this is the first of that run. On this past Saturday, I showed him the monster I had reworked and gave him a brief of the beginning of The Adventurs of SnakeMan Jones. After studying the piece and seeing the development of the collaboration, he gave his 2 thumbs up approval and said he likes where the character and story are headed. This has been a really exciting adventure and experiment. Enjoy it!

The Adventurs of SnakeMan Jones

A man of mystery—legend with no history; nobody knows from where he came nor the origin of such a fearsome frame. Early one morning he was seen, rolled in heavy and broke onto the scene. Thas what the people tell…

Moving with speed beyond comprehension

 A chilling sight a cold body on that motorbike

 Cutting through the fog, powered by an action of fury

Smooth locomotion. What is this beast?

A man, monster in stature, and His Bike moving over both land and sea—traverse any terrain.  One of a kind partnership, built stacked with power and presence.

Widely respected, Deeply feared

A rebel with a particularity for justice…

On this particular day, he became fame. The sun rose orange in red as blood over the endless sea Azu-Blue.  There was a ship, that housed a hoard of ruthless creatures that drifted from place to place appeasing their taste for treasure. They were known as The Gnomads; a collection of lost souls fated for doom. They were looking for trouble and they sure found it.

There in the Azu-Blue was a well known island town, StaggMooreFalls, a beautiful place: botanically lush, tropical colored birds and fish, wild dogs and boars, joyous inhabitants—a peaceful place booming with life. It was early spring and the streams and falls swelled with water. Freshly melted water pouring down from the mountains as the ice snow melted and winter washed away. This was the best time to be at StaggMooreFalls. The town was especially festive as the people prepped for the annual celebration known as the Full Bloom Festival.  There was a flower, a poppy with pollen that was pure gold, and it was the one night in the year that the islands rare flower would open up under the full moon. This flower only grew on StaggMooreFalls and nowhere else in the world. This flower was said to have magic powers. That night they were going to make wishes and dance through the night around a grand campfire. Both the flower and the moon would be in full bloom, and that’s how the celebration got its name.  It was a time to celebrate the year past and that one ahead. It was a carnival, a jubilee! The island was well known round those parts because the Full Bloom Festival had such a rich reputation.

Knowing that the town would be prepping for the celebration and preoccupied with their happiness, the Gnomads plotted to invade the island and loot all the treasures, food, and women. They were a rustic sort of scourge with simple craving for anything of value that could be stolen. It was the night before the Full Bloom Festival everyone on StaggMooreFalls was working hard, from the children to the elder folk, preparing for the carnival. The Gnomads slipped in, sailing under the nightfall, and hid out in a harbor cave.

Meanwhile, SnakeMan Jones was swinging loungely in his hammock on a small remote island off the North side of StaggMooreFalls. He was counting the stars, or trying to at least, with a jar of his favorite spirit in hand. Coat draped over the stake that held the hammock in position and boots dropped in the sand next to where he rest. Toes wiggling in the night’s cool breeze; he got tired of counting, his sight moved to the humble fire and right next to it was His Bike. With a quick swigg from the jugg, he admired it—His Bike—freshly detailed and waxed…he loved to spend time tending his few prized possessions. If he wasn’t shining the bike, he was conditioning the boots, or sharpening the sword blade, or polishing up his helmet.  Softly lulled by the rhythmic rocking of the hammock in the wind, Jones dozed off…

A curious lizard scuttled over and lapped up a bit of the spirits that had splashed by the wayside onto a rock…tempted by the shine as the moon reflected into it, almost full. After there was no more liquid to lap there were only swaying tracks, zigg zagged in the sand to testify of the visitors taste for mischief.

With the passing of a few slow hours, the blood orange sun crested above the horizon and blazed onto the Azu-Blue. StaggMooreFalls woke extra early and conducted a grand breakfast feast, the Gnomads wiped the sleep from their eyes and rubbed their hands together with greedful intention on the rise, Snake Man Jones rolled off the hammock, threw his feet into the boots and laced them up. He grabbed his coat and sword then pulled his helmet down over his head as he jumped on His Bike—an easy start to a fateful day.

Feature: Hannah Connor and Flor Macías Delgado

The LIFESTYLE Feature series expands. Tonight we add two new voices to the ongoing conversation. Hannah Connor and  Flor Macías Delgado are two creators and agents of change that come to us from Madrid by way of Washington DC, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Maine, Bologna, and Amsterdam. These two minds engage with the interview on a personal level and bring us their unique perspectives on Reflection and Response and experiences directing the Madrid theatre group “The Auxiliares” for their performances of Eve Ensler’s award winning play, The Vagina Monologues opening on March 11th.

Leading off with some basics, where are you from? And where are you at?

HC: I tell people I’m from Washington, DC. I moved there when I was 10 years old and I feel like the city has defined a huge part of who I am. Free museums, beautiful cherry blossom trees, AND Barack Obama, who couldn’t love it?! But I was actually born in a small town in Maine and grew up in a farm house that was 200 years old. My dad wanted to have goats, but instead he had three daughters…

Right now I’m living in Madrid, Spain on a Fulbright grant. By day I teach at a bilingual high school in the outskirts on Madrid and by night I explore the millions of things to do around Madrid, cook exotic foods and play board games.

FMD: It’s a complicated question, really; and never coming to terms with answering that question is what has guided my interests in life. I am originally from Los Angeles, CA but I moved to Mexico City when I was five years old and lived there for ten years. I spent the last three years of high school in Los Angeles, then moved to Philadelphia for college. Besides that, I have lived in Bologna, Italy; Amsterdam; and most recently Madrid, where I’ll be until next summer. After that, who knows. I have yet to figure out my next move! There is so much of the world left to see!

What does Reflection and Response mean to you?

HC: Before I go to sleep at night, I often lie in bed and think about three positive or happy things that happened that day. Sometimes they are little things like someone saying hello as they pass me on the street or bigger events, such as, finally finishing a project that I was working on. I think that reflections (whether daily, weekly, or whenever it feels right) is an incredibly important part of being in touch with yourself and the world around you. They are a way of looking back and asking yourself “Am I doing what I want to do with my life? Am I spending my time that way I want it to be spent?”

Reflections are how we notice what is happening in the world. And response is what we do in reaction to those reflections. Our responses are the actions we take to work towards ending injustice and improving the lives of ourselves and those around us.

FMD:I think any art is a reaction, whether it is to a social cause, or your mere inspiration, art is always a response. I want to direct, write and produce pieces that make you reflect about society, and incite an immediate response from the audience. I think that pieces that leave the audience in a happy state of “Aw, that was nice” are a waste of time. I want people to have a definite reaction to my art: be it anger, shock, or even disgust. I want to bring to light issues that are not usually talked about in theater pieces. I am all for the responses.

How does The Vagina Monologues fit in with that definition?

HC: The Vagina Monologues (TVM) and the entire V-day movement is a response to violence toward women. TVM is a play based on interviews with women that raises awareness about issues related to women. The monologues cover a range of emotions and many topics, focusing on women’s sexuality and the stigma surrounding rape and sexual assault. Discussing these issues, especially through a theatrical work, is a powerful way of creating a conversation about these very important topics.

FMD: The Vagina Monologues is all about inciting the audience to reflect on women’s issues and has brief episodes of audience participation. It’s not a play you watch and then go out and live your life the same way. It challenges you to do something to stop violence towards women. At some productions, people are asked to stand if they–or someone they know–has ever been a victim of sexual violence. I am always shocked to see how many women stand up. The first time I was ever involved in TVM I couldn’t believe how many of them were people I knew personally. It really did change me. It made me see that TVM wasn’t just a play, it was part of a movement, and it did more than just entertain people for an hour and a half.

What else have you been working on recently? What are you looking to work on next?

HC: In college I studied urban studies, and as a city lover, I’ve been spending my time in Madrid learning about the history and confluence of cultures in the city. Over the next half year, while I’m still living here, I’m excited to continue these explorations.

At the end of the school year I’m planning on moving back to the States and next year I’ll hopefully be teaching in a public school in a city back home. Our urban education system in the United States needs a lot of work and I’m looking forward to becoming part of the movement to fix it. 

FMD: Artistically, I have been quite dormant. I have been working on grad school applications, specifically to Migration and Ethnic Studies programs around Europe. I am interested in working with immigrant teens, and using art and theatre as means for social change. I currently work at two high schools in Madrid and plan cultural activities that challenge the students to look at their culture from a different standpoint. I want them to talk about racism, gay rights, discrimination, abortion, and what those issues mean to them as Spanish teens. I try to keep busy learning French, and getting involved with animal rights activism.

Who or what inspires you? 

HC: More than anything I’m inspired by people who find unique ways to follow their passions and impact the world in a positive way.  Besides these people who make my life interesting and eventful, I’m inspired by the little things that keep me smiling every day: watching the sunrise over the Reina Sofia on my way to work, seeing the masses of people constantly walking on the streets of Madrid, or drinking tea at one of my favorite cafes.

FMD: I am constantly looking for inspiration and find it in the simplest ways. My students inspire me. Working with teenagers is what I want to do in life, and their passion for living is refreshing. They see the world in a different way, they believe they can achieve anything they set out for, and I think that as we get older we lose part of that. We become more realistic and forget the passion we had when younger. I see inspiration in simple acts of kindness. I want to create art that inspires people to do something about the society they live in. I want to inspire change in some way. Lately, I have been obsessed with “What Would You Do?” clips, so I would also have to say that John Quiñones is the man.

Is there anything else you would like the Collective to know?

HC: Come see the Vagina Monologues!! If you are in Madrid, our show is going to be baller. And if you are somewhere else in the world, find a show near you!

And just as importantly: Stay informed on the issues. One in three women on this planet will be impacted by violence in her lifetime. That is an alarmingly high number. The first step in changing those statistics is being aware of the facts. Change comes from within and every person on this planet can do their part in ending violence against women.

HC: All the “Bobs” of the world! One of the Monologues in TVM,Because He Liked to Look at It, is about a woman who learns to love vaginas after she is with a guy named Bob. Bob loves vaginas and understands how they are magical, beautiful, powerful, and oh so very important (we all came from a vagina!). We need more men like him in the world!

FMD: Eve Ensler, the author of TVM; and all artists, and activists who work hard to make the world a better place. My very own “Bob” and my mom, hi mom!
