Eric Medina represents the wide expanse of possibilities in music. Eric explores various facets of Rap from the studio to stage with stops at the DJ booth in between. This Madrid-based artist uses this melodic art form to slow down the chaotic world around us and focus on the present. Below Eric goes in on Reflection and Response and welcomes us to his world while discussing his various projects including his groups ESTAFA and High Standing, work in Headroom Studios, an audiobook in collaboration with poet Julio Reija, and much much more. Para mi la reflexión es un ejercicio de análisis, de tomar aire y pararse pensar en que has hecho, a dónde querías llegar con tus acciones y dónde has llegado realmente. Digamos que es un momento de quietud ante tanta velocidad que nos rodea.
To me, reflection is an exercise in analysis, taking a moment to think about what you’ve done, where you wanted to get as a result of your actions, and how far you’ve actually made it. I’d say it’s a quiet moment amidst all the chaos around us.
Para empezar con algunos puntos básicas, de dónde vienes? Dónde estás?
Leading off with some basics, where are you from? And where are you at?
EM: Pues para empezar, vengo y estoy en Madrid y vengo y estoy en el Hip Hop.
Soy productor, dj y técnico de sonido. Me gusta la ironía, la profesionalidad, el buen humor y atrapar el talento de los demás en mis grabaciones.
EM: I’m originally from – and currently live in – Madrid, and I come from – and am currently in – Hip Hop.
I’m a producer, DJ, and sound engineer. I like irony, professionalism, good humor, and capturing other artists’ talents through my recordings.
Que quiere decir “reflexión,” y “respuesta,” para ti?
What does Reflection and Response mean to you?
EM: Para mi la reflexión es un ejercicio de análisis, de tomar aire y pararse pensar en que has hecho, a dónde querías llegar con tus acciones y dónde has llegado realmente. Digamos que es un momento de quietud ante tanta velocidad que nos rodea.
Y una respuesta lo veo como una solución ante una situación.
EM: To me, reflection is an exercise in analysis, taking a moment to think about what you’ve done, where you wanted to get as a result of your actions, and how far you’ve actually made it. I’d say it’s a quiet moment amidst all the chaos around us.
I see response as a solution to a situation.
Cómo se mete tu arte en esta definición?
How does your art fit in with that definition?
EM: Digamos que cuando creo me relajo, paro el tiempo y el bullicio que hay a mi alrededor y me centro únicamente en lo que estoy haciendo, en los samples, los sonidos, las programaciones y melodías, pongamos que me centro en el lugar al que quiero llegar con la música. No creo que quiera dar una respuesta trascendental a ninguna pregunta, o si. Lo único que hago es lo que necesito hacer.
EM: When I create, I relax, time seems to stand still, the commotion around me settles down, and I focus myself entirely on what I’m making – the samples, sounds, programs, and melodies. I focus on where I’d like to take my music. I don’t think I mean to create transcendental responses through my music, but sometimes that’s what happens. I just make what I feel the need to make.
Que más estás haciendo actualmente? Que proyectos estás pensando trabajar próximamente?
What else have you been working on recently? What are you looking to work on next?
EM: Actualmente me he centrado en un nuevo proyecto: ESTAFA
En agosto de 2013 me encerré en Headroom Estudios (http://www.headroom.es) con Mario García de SoloGarcías y Artes para grabar un disco bajo el título de POR DINERO.
Una vez grabado nos fuimos al local y montamos la Banda que, básicamente, son Sólo García (https://www.facebook.com/sologarciamusica?ref=ts&fref=ts) con la incorporación de Gito Maleta a los teclados, Artes como Mc y yo como Dj. A partir de aquí a mover el disco, grabar videos y dar conciertos.
Por otro lado tengo varios proyectos estancados a falta de muy poquito.
Un libro-cd en el que pongo colchón musical a los poemas de Julio Reija. Un proyecto realmente interesante por qué me permite, básicamente, hacer lo que viene en gana sobre unas voces ya grabadas, me permite saltarme mis standars de creación, las armonías y las melodías, las estructuras…cualquier cosa.
A la vez estoy terminando de mezclar un proyecto con High Standing, al más puro estilo Rap.
Y también tengo en el tintero un proyecto paralelo con Artes más ecléctico de lo habitual, totalmente diferente al anterior trabajo “30”

In August of 2013 I locked myself in Headroom Estudios (http://www.headroom.es) with Mario García (of SoloGarcías y Artes) to record an album titled POR DINERO.
Once we finished recording, we went to perform at a venue, and launched our band, that essentially consisted of Sólo García (https://www.facebook.com/sologarciamusica?ref=ts&fref=ts) along with Gito Maleta on keyboard, Artes as the MC, and myself, the DJ. Moving forward, we’d like to promote the album, produce music videos, and perform shows.
I’m also working on various other projects that are on hold at the moment, but are close to being finished. One is an audiobook that involves playing music over poems by Julio Reija. This project is interesting because it allows me to basically create whatever comes to mind over a pre-recorded vocal track, and it allows me to expand my standards creatively – the harmonies, melodies, arrangements…or whatever else.
At the same time, I’m finishing up mixing a Rap project I’m working on with High Standing.
Another project I have on deck is with Artes, and it’s more eclectic than usual, and completely different from our previous project “30”.
Quien o que te inspira?
Who or what inspires you?
EM: Me inspira casi cualquier cosa, no sé, si vengo de ver una sesión de algún dj que me haya llenado corro a pinchar, si veo un batera que me parte los ritmos y me deja la boca abierta, corro a programar.
EM: I can be inspired by almost anything – say, if I see a DJ that impacts me, I’ll feel the need to spin, and if I see a drummer playing sick beats that leave me open-mouthed, I’ll feel the need to run and produce something myself.
