the Cove

the Cove. Study of a funky tree at La Jolla Cove in San Diego, CA.

This is a section of one of the many trees there that are all gnarled and twisted up. I think all the unusual forms and shapes are really interesting because they don’t look like “regular” trees. Taking it out of context, like the section here, moves it even further from what “regular” trees are “supposed” to look like. A different outlook, complicating the categories.

Home and Away

The deep archives, part 5. One last look back before we move forward!

Graphite and watercolor on paper.

Home and Away is another piece from my transportation series. Using two very different mediums (pencil and watercolor) always adds a new dimension to the game, new ways to express.

The Next Move

The deep archives, part 3.

Gold scratchboard.

The Next Move is another variation on reverse drawing. This piece started out as an all black sheet of scratchboard. I used various sharp tools to scratch away at the surface layer to reveal the gold color underneath. This concept is similar to what I did with Storytelling and Keep Pushin’ – I used tools to reveal highlights and define the figure’s face and features, while using the black base color as my darkest value.

Keep Pushin’

The deep archives, part 2.

Graphite off paper.

Like my piece Storytelling from last week, this piece also involves a reverse drawing process, but with a slightly different approach. With Keep Pushin’, I started by outlining the figure’s silhouette and shading it all in with a dark graphite pencil. Then I used an eraser to pull out the highlights from the black background and define the face and the clothing. Removing graphite from the paper allowed me to turn the full silhouette into a more defined figure.

Storytelling

The next series of work I’m going to showcase lies deep in the archive trunk. Dusting off and bringin back some pieces from 2005 and 2006!

White pencil on black paper.

Storytelling started out as a black sheet of construction paper. In a reverse process, I used white pencil to pull the forms of the figure out of the black paper. Instead of drawing shadows and darks into a white background, I had to shade in reverse, drawing highlights out of the black background to create the figure.

White pencil on black paper is a counter-intuitive and challenging way to think about drawing – but I think it’s a dope method for engaging with the subject matter in a deeper way.

I Am Troy Davis

Paint marker on canvas.

Nearly two weeks have passed since the state of Georgia executed Troy Davis, demonstrating yet another “justice system” failure. This project is a tribute to Troy Davis, Rest In Power, as well as an expression of solidarity and unity in the continuing struggle against social injusticeS.

In Troy Davis’ words:

“There are so many more Troy Davis’. This fight to end the death penalty is not won or lost through me but through our strength to move forward and save every innocent person in captivity around the globe. We need to dismantle this Unjust system city by city, state by state and country by country.”

I based the image on the left shoe on one of my past drawings, UNTITLED.

Gran Via

Over the next week, I’ll be dippin a little further back in the archives to take a look at some work from 2009. Gran Via is part of a series of pieces I created based on photographs I took while studying in Barcelona in 2008. Stay tuned for more from this series…
