Original Mondays: Pay

This track came about from the Berkeley Sessions that V, Megan, and I had back over New Years. Cue banjo, Synth sounds from Massive, Reason 5 drums, some electric guitar work, Ableton mixing via this new crazy Akai Apc 40, Megan and my vocals and you have “Pay.” I’ll be debuting the track live at an upcoming show at Andy’s Bar in Madrid this Wednesday.

The lyrics came from two sessions. My first verse was recorded a few days before we did any work with Megan. However Megan, V, and I went out for some food at Lilly’s, the famous North Berkeley Chinese food spot and we discussed family and how sometimes at the beginning of our twenties we can think we’re ready for huge responsibilities. The lyrics I recorded during the previous session deal with age- it was almost serendipitous that we had that conversation at lunch. We later touched on these ideas in the chorus.

“I don’t ever wanna pay for aging that is just something that I don’t do. And I don’t ever wanna laugh for ages, I just wanna hold you.”

“Pay for aging, not enough. Insane we make things, let’s live for once.”

Original Mondays: Tools of the Trade Rose Street Sessions

I hope everybody had a dope holiday season. Here in Madrid I’m without internet at home and hella places are closed because it’s El Día de los Reyes Magos. Props to Ojála (where I also did some mastering of Cold Bed) for being open and having good ass Wifi. Also shout out to “Message From Ancient Days,” the textbook my pops used to teach to 8th graders in Alameda, which serves as a great stand for the Novation Launchpad I was using. This New Years Megan, V, and I reunited for the first time as a group in over a year. Whenever we meet I try and get a session in with Megan (see He’s Your Guy Acoustic) who has a dope and unique voice. V snapped some Tools of the Trade pics while we worked. The forthcoming track features some new instrumentation I haven’t had the chance to really explore in a while such as banjo and electric guitar. Look out for the track coming up on the LIFESTYLE Original Monday Series!

Peter Muller live at The Toast Cafe

This past Sunday I did my first ElectroBrunch show at The Toast Cafe in Madrid. I also started a new soundcloud account for tracks I’ll be performing both at Toast every Sunday for ElectroBrunch and around other venues throughout the city. I also gave out 4 copies of our LRR ‘Zine at the Show. It’s pretty dope to be able to perform regularly at a city so far from home. Shouts to Toast and the people who rolled through!

Post 11/12

After a private English class lasting an hour and a half and cooking some dinner I had some time to put something together for the post today. Started with an acoustic guitar fingerpicking pattern on D major. Then threw some drums from Reason around with some drums from León and claps from California. Finally sampled the guitar part for the second part of the track. Reason/Ableton/Acoustic Guitar.

Bouzuki Sing

This track continues in the looping vein. The first instrument heard on the recording is the bouzouki I bought while traveling in Greece last year. I purchased the instrument precisely because I wanted a new sound in my tracks. The beat boxing comes courtesy of my guy Troy recorded in the 55th and Brooklyn house in Seattle. The final mix down comes from my studio apartment on Calle de la Palma in Madrid.

Bob Amy #1

(Train Tracks near Robledo de Fenar, León)

This track is a continuation on my Looping project I started with the Radio Leon series. Here I sample parts of Amy Winehouse’s Take The Box and Bob Dylan’s The Times Are A-Changin’. I also use my own drum set (sampled from hits taken from a session in Seattle) and other instruments from León. These sort of tracks are super fun to do live because of the power of effects and arrangement made easier by hardware that makes firing off samples pretty simple.

Radio Leon: The Beats on the B Roll

Whatup!

First of all, thank you for the love on the first two episodes of Radio Leon. We’re gonna get Episode Three up and running for this Friday.

Part of the Radio Leon broadcast series includes voice overs with information about the processes behind the songs and the experience of living in Leon, España while making these records.

Behind the words there is an instrumental. For this post I am showcasing the Beats on the B Roll of the Radio Leon broadcast.

Beat of the Centurayray (2004)

Going Down (2012)

Beat of the Centurayray is one of the first beats I ever made, back on the 4 track recorder Boss BR 532 and the Miracle Piano Teaching System. I felt the Electric Piano setting on the Miracle and threw an arpeggiated chord progression from the piano on the BR 532 drum machine.

Going Down is an updated version of the previous track but this time using Massive and Ableton Live. There is also a break in the later part of the track that is a new addition to the 2004 track.

20 Minute Beat

I created this track while V had something to do before a Skype meeting. The drums come from self-recorded samples of a drum set in the homie Jorge’s basement out here in Leon. I threw a rhythm together, put one cymbal on reverse, hooked up some synth bass via Massive and finished up with some slide guitar. Once I decided on the instruments the process took around 20 minutes.
