Spain Recap

the LIFESTYLE

Yo! Welcome to the long-anticipated LIFESTYLE Spain trip recap! Earlier this summer, we were fortunate enough to have the chance to spend two weeks in Barcelona and Madrid, enjoying the first LIFESTYLE reunion in some time while also pursuing opportunities to create and collaborate with other artists.

El Raval

We started the trip out in Barcelona, a familiar place that nonetheless presented us with new experiences, interactions, spaces, and inspirations. We set up our one-week HUB in an apartment in the dope neighborhood of Raval – a centralized barrio with narrow, vibrant cobblestone streets and and a distinctly timeless and hardwearing energy.

Throughout the week, ACTIVE was the agenda of the day. We worked on some new projects including a couple of amazing live RR interviews with local artists Javier Blanco and David Figueroa. (Be on the lookout for their words coming at the Collective in the coming weeks!)

We set up shop right on the Barceloneta beach area and played some tunes on acoustic guitar, featuring tracks from P’s album Shake This Maze along with some classic covers.

Peter Muller

V’s “Shop Sign Studies” drawings were inspired by the local Raval landscape, full of classic, hand-painted shop signs, each with their own distinct character. Lookout for more artwork to come!

Shop Sign Studies

La Ria, a small corner bar in El Gótico became our jumpoff point for playing two shows in the neighborhood. We connected with the owner of the spot one afternoon while having a café, and the following night P played an acoustic set there that also turned into an impromptu jam session with Franck – the cook – who happened to be the dopest percussionist.

The show the next night was at a bar down the street called Las Cuevas del Sorté – in their tiled basement venue with rough stone walls and an unparalleled sound. Friends and fam came out for a show that started as a live looping set that transitioned into an intimate acoustic session, before concluding with a reggaeton DJ set with one of our brothers from the city.

We spent the second leg of the trip in Madrid, which was quite a farewell tour for P, who had been living there for the past two years teaching English and developing a Hip Hop English Education curriculum for elementary-age students. After also completing four albums for the LIFESTYLE Studios, collaborating across the open seas from Madrid to Brooklyn, it was time to head back stateside, on to the next building block.

The last few days in Madrid were a time of celebration and preparation for the road ahead. It all came together for the goodbye concert, “La Despedida de Peter Muller,” at the underground cave at RepubliK Club – a session featuring live looping and beat building with multi-lingual freestyles, along with a late night acoustic session. An unforgettable finale to the LIFESTYLE’s European venture.

Original Mondays: Hip Hop English With Peter

This project started as a collaboration between the bad-ass teacher I work with in second grade English and Science, Ricardo , and the textbook we were using at the time. The unit the kids were doing was on animal habitats and we decided it would be dope to write a song and have me record it to rap later with the kids to see how they would respond. Ricardo wrote the first version of lyrics that would become my first track, “Habitats.”

The version I brought to class turned out to be too fast so I went home and slowed it down. Then we were on a roll. As summer is approaching, I thought it would cool to record a full album of tracks so my students can listen to something different in English in July and August. Thus, “Hip Hop English With Peter,” was born. For a week and a half, I’ve been recording and rerecording tracks based on units from textbooks we work with at school as well as consulting English teachers on common mistakes.

The album contains a range of levels and goals for learning and comprehension. The first 4 tracks were written specifically for second grade, “Work” for third grade, and the last 3 tracks are aimed at practicing 5th and 6th grade common mistakes.

I am also nearly finished with a preschool edition of Hip Hop English, and am working with a preschool teacher who is helping me make songs more enjoyable for younger language learners.

I look forward to working further on this project. This is only the beginning, Below are the lyrics from the first Hip Hop English With Peter for Elementary School English Learners:

Habitats

I am oviparous

I lay eggs

I am a toucan

Fly with friends

I live in a habitat

Rainforest

Weather is warm

Rain is pouring

Wet rainforest, dry desert

Cold polar region

Forest trees birds and bees

All the animals singing

I am viviparous

I don’t lay eggs

I am a camel

With friends

I live in a habitat

Yes, the desert

Night is cold

Day is hot weather

Wet rainforest, dry desert

Cold polar region

Forest trees birds and bees

All the animals singing

I am oviparous

I lay eggs

I am a penguin

with friends

I live in a habitat

The polar region

The weather is cold

No chameleons

Wet rainforest, dry desert

Cold polar region

Forest trees birds and bees

All the animals singing

Wet rainforest, dry desert

Cold polar region

Forest trees birds and bees

All the animals singing

Towns and Cities

Towns and cities

Cities and towns

Cities are bigger more noise and sounds

Towns are smaller buildings are lower

And the streets those are shorter

We can do many things

Go shopping then go out in the evening

And some are by the sea

Others by in the mountains it’s so pretty

Towns and cities have a mayor

With counselors at town hall they work there

organize services for all

Festivals, like the winter ball

Towns and cities

Cities and towns

Cities are bigger more noise and sounds

Towns are smaller buildings are lower

And the streets those are shorter

So What’s in the city?

Some public transport

Underground and the bus

Get my toys at department store

Watch a movie at the cinema

In the town smaller buildings

My house is next to a square

Medicine at the chemist

There is a school, my friends are there

Forces

Push your table

Pull your hair

Forces move objects from here to there

Drop a pencil don’t be scared

Gravity a force in the air

Push and pull forces move objects in different ways

A big object means a big force

They can even change shape

Blow a balloon- it changes shape

Push a rock- it doesn’t change

Squeeze a sponge it changes shape

Forces happen everyday

How does a force make an object move?

A force is invisible but we can see what they do?

Start moving kick a ball

Stop moving block that ball

Move faster go on the swing

Change direction move slower please

Seasons and Months

Autumn September, October,

Wear a jacket it is colder

Back to school to learn new things

My new T shirt is cool to me

It’s Winter it’s cold outside

Please put on your jacket don’t cry

Put on a coat and wear some trousers

Make a snowman for an hour

It’s Spring March April May

Take off your coat put on a shirt is great

It is windy sometimes it rains

Sometimes it’s a sunny day

It’s Summer June July August

Put on shorts outside it’s hottest

Put on your suncap and shorts

Put on sunscreen open the door!

Means of Transport

Train, bus, helicopter, and car

Means of transport, yes they are

Underground, ships, and planes,

Carry passengers goods, and freight

Boats. Motorbikes, and lorries,

Move people and things fast and slowly,

Roads have one lane going each way

Motorways have more lanes

Vroom vrrom goes the car

Choo choo I am a train

Ummm I am a boat

Now wings fly like a plane

Vroom vrrom goes the car

Choo choo I am a train

Ummm I am a boat

Now wings fly like a plane

Train, bus, helicopter, and car

Means of transport, yes they are

Underground, ships, and planes,

Carry passengers goods, and freight

Boats. Motorbikes, and lorries,

Move people and things fast and slowly,

Roads have one lane going each way

Motorways have more lanes

Trains stop at stations

Plans land at airports

Buses taxis underground

Public transportation

Ships stop at ports

Taxis and cars road vehicles

Cars, bicycles, bikes

Private transportation

Train, bus, helicopter, and car

Means of transport, yes they are

Underground, ships, and planes,

Carry passengers goods, and freight

Boats. Motorbikes, and lorries,

Move people and things fast and slowly,

Roads have one lane going each way

Motorways have more lanes

Work

We work we do activities

We get money from the work we do

For example people work on trousers

And work to sell them to me and you

Some jobs use resources from nature

Mining, fishing, farmers with a cow

Some jobs make products

in the industries of furniture, textile, automotive, wow!

We work we do activities

We get money from the work we do

For example people work on trousers

And work to sell them to me and you

Some jobs provide services like

a doctor that helps patients

Some work in retail

As shop owners or shop assistants

We work we do activities

We get money from the work we do

For example people work on trousers

And work to sell them to me and you

Present Perfect

I haven’t ever been to London

But I’m planning on going later on this summer

I have lived in Spain for all my life

I go to school everyday see my friends at night

This is the story of my daily routine

I use the simple present with regular things

Use the present perfect to talk about facts

That are still happening but started in the past

Everyday wake up and have breakfast

Get to school at 9 for a science lesson

After that I have maths then the playground

snack is an apple tastes great wow!

Then more class, lengua and math

When the bell rings I meet my friends to relax

Next to the park I finish my homework

After is dinner san jacobos are so good!

I clear the table after the meal

then we watch a movie that’s our family’s deal

next I brush my teeth and I go to bed

And tomorrow the routine starts over again

I haven’t ever been to London

But I’m planning on going later on this summer

I have lived in Spain for all my life

I go to school everyday see my friends at night

This is the story of my daily routine

I use the simple present with regular things

Use the present perfect to talk about facts

That are still happening but started in the past

What is the present perfect?

Actions in the past that are still current

Like “Hi my name is Peter, the class assistant

I’ve worked at school since 2011 teaching English

Or I have just made a cake.

Why is that current?

Well… I still have a piece and if you are hungry

And I would just love to serve it

I haven’t ever been to London

But I’m planning on going later on this summer

I have lived in Spain for all my life

I go to school everyday see my friends at night

This is the story of my daily routine

I use the simple present with regular things

Use the present perfect to talk about facts

That are still happening but started in the past

The Right Way to Ask

I forgot my homework in the other class

May I go and get it is the right way to ask

May I come in? not “I can pass?”

May I go to the restroom, not I can.

If you are late ask “may I come in.”

We shouldn’t disrupt the other students

If I need a pencil ask “may I borrow one,”

and remember to bring one tomorrow son

After school I ask “may I play.”

Depends on what myp arents say

After dinner I ask “may I watch TV?”

Only if you finish studying.

I forgot my homework in the other class

May I go and get it is the right way to ask

May I come in? not “I can pass?”

May I go to the restroom, not I can.

At the breakfast table I need the butter

I say “Would you pass me the butter, mother.”

With a smile she says “here you go honey,”

I tell her thank you, the pancakes are lovely

My friend Alex from school fell down

I asked “would you like some help right now?”

I went and got a teacher, she said it was fine

she put on a band-aid Alex gave me 5

I forgot my homework in the other class

May I go and get it is the right way to ask

May I come in? not “I can pass?”

May I go to the restroom, not I can.

Once A Week

I listen to music, he watches TV

She looks at a picture. What does she see?

It is a man sitting at a table

Having lunch using a fork to eat

On a Saturday in September

Talking with my friend Vanessa

She told me hello, I said “what’s up?”

Just took an exam, man it was tough

Once a week at 5 P.M.

I go to Maria’s house with all my friends

All day I can’t wait to go

Will it be fun? Yes, I think so

I am good at speaking English

I am bad at dancing tango

But I’m better than my teacher Peter

Man, he dances like a flamingo

I have a brother, I am ten years old

Do we have homework? I hope so.

I wrote it down in my agenda

and I’ll do it, ‘cus I always remember.

Once a week at 5 P.M.

I go to Maria’s house with all my friends

All day I can’t wait to go

Will it be fun? Yes, I think so

Wake Up

I wrote Wake Up way back in the 55thandBrooklyn Seattle days. The lyrics deal with a crush I had at the time. I tried to focus on sleep patterns as a metaphor for thinking through my romantic situation. What do you use to wake up?

At the I sample The Beatles’ “Baby It’s You,” The sample appears at 0:53 in the Beatles track.

Wake up/ But it’s so hard to do/ The floor’s cold think I’ll stay up inside this dew/ This pillow provides more support than you/ And I’ll stay in bed till 6 in the afternoon/Wake up/ But it’s so hard to do/ The floor’s cold think I’ll stay up inside this dew/ This pillow provides more support than you/ And I’ll stay in bed till 5 in the afternoon/

These mind games she plays are amazing/ Every time I find gains turn out to be lies lately/ Been too many years/ Not to see it clear/ Though she might flirt and veer/ The thing is not changing/ Used to be long and lanky/ Now I got cheeks/ no exercise exacerbates angst greatly/ Painstakingly wait patiently by the phone/ Waste hours just watch Hoarders and drone/ But I swear to god I’m over it/ I entered this war alone/ And on my own/ I’m done with the soldering/ I don’t deserve it and neither do you/ As you fuck whoever cuz I’m tired and through

Wake up/ But it’s so hard to do/ The floor’s cold think I’ll live up inside this dew/ This pillow provides more support than you/ And I’ll stay in bed till 5 in the afternoon/ Just wake up/ But it’s so hard to do/ The floor’s cold think I’ll live up inside this dew/ This pillow provides more support than you/ And I’ll stay in bed till 5 in the afternoon/ I wake up

My invitations seems to be a game/ Imitations pixelated frames on your playstation tres/ She sees me in a friendly way/ And just seems to say things that a friend would say/ But I let the winks and smily faced texts get to me/ Stupidly imagine actions we don’t end up doing/ Telling myself lies as my mental health slides into fantasy attraction chosen so randomly/ No use looking for accuracy/ Cupid shoots and the damage done collaterally/ So if it wasn’t for this pen and this pad and this beat/ I would have been as sad as I was mad at seventeen/ Let’s get it all out and throw it on the table/ Don’t know if I loved her is a twenty year old able?/ But her burn once hurt so painful/ Until I turned the scar into my angel

Wake up/ But it’s so hard to do/ The floor’s cold think I’ll live up inside this dew/ This pillow provides more support than you/ As I’ stay in bed till 5 in the afternoon/Wake up/ But it’s so hard to do/ The floor’s cold think I’ll stay up inside this dew/ This pillow provides more support than you/ As I stay in bed till 5 in the afternoon/I Wake up

Patchwork: Untitled

Untitled

Untitled is classic V- Attention to detail that conveys texture, feeling, and meaning. For me piece’s lines stretch into the past and demonstrate the power of Legacy.  For Patchwork Untitled I delved deep into the LIFESTYLE sample archives and found a track that V and I recorded back in the basement sessions at my parents house on Rose St, in Berkeley. Both the drums and the “organ” are from that period. The “organ,” is a sampled instrument from an early electric guitar part of mine.

Family/Generations.

Patchwork Untitled

Patchwork Untitled Acapella

One two three four

Everyday comes from 10,000 more

The family continues all through the lineage

Every single present’s connect to past millions

He stares head down/But no frown instead a smile/Imagines his seed’s achievements in miles away from where he toils each day/The night creeps up/He pees out green stuff/ This is enough/His shoulder gets bolder with every strike/No Folgers to ward off the latest of nights/This is today as the story I write/If it wasn’t for his spade/I wouldn’t have life/The present conditions are results of/Past decisions resolve so tough/That agrarian servant/Perhaps it was urban/ past pain joins today’s hurting/It’s all a current/As together we go/Lonliness lost in the family scrolls/Handed down from places so cold/Details forgot/But the struggle is known

One two three four

Everyday comes from 10,000 more

The family continues all through the lineage

Every single present’s connect to past millions

And they join together 1, 2, 3,4/Fists in the distance/Can still see more/ Moving tide/ Forever’s fact of life/Many times passed the mic/This story is ageless/This laptop was once pages/Before sound was translated/It was written in each language/Learned from the cave wall statements/This shit goes out to the Angulies and Mullers/And the names of my blood that time covers/And your people too/Generations of truth is the reason we get through current disputes/Smiles in the face of the burning sun/He’s got that ticket/Sister waits for him to come/ 200 years after the fact his offspring’s success validates sweat of the past

One two three four

Everyday comes from 10,000 more

The family continues all through the lineage

Every single present’s connect to past millions

Patchwork: Landscape

Landscape

Patchwork: Landscape.

For this patchwork I used a sample recorded back in Berkeley from a nearly forgotten session with some old friends. I found an accordion track that seemed to go with the idea of the bicycle journey. I wrote the lyrics the next day (January 30th post day). V’s piece uses motion is such interesting ways- both the narrative and detail of V’s piece stuck out to me and were influences on this patchwork.

A Capella

Patchwork: Landscape

A friend said they look something like mountains/ obstacles to get around in/ a hill of wheels/ peaks an valleys/ bars and steel/ falling freely/ the feeling of a thousand movements suddenly still/

He said he’ll never again depict bicycles/Minute curves made many lights dull/Into morning/He’s pouring over each individual frame/3 panels later the piece became/What it is today/

Off in the dusk/ Johnny gets up/ Brushes off his must/Hops on two wheels starting to rust/ Heads downtown because it’s market day/ Grabs his mackerel two jars of lard mayonnaise/ Sets up his stand right by the French fry place/ Amsterdam’s morning hours are an early grey/ These surly markets will surely pay/ For a fresh fish sandwich that he’s still learning to make/

To the Southeast/ The second prayer is sounding/ Sarah peddles between beggars and sheiks/ Already the second quarter she’s missing her team/ Qualifying for championships/Rides her 6 speed over the mountain back to her crib/ Fast as shit/ Shifts to evade pebbles/Her gown nestles / Her nerves/If they score she needs it that’s passion for sure/ Cousin sees her fly fast a blur/ Blurts out Salam in time for the third/

A friend said they look something like mountains/ Obstacles to get around in/ A hill of wheels/ Peaks an valleys/ Bars and steel/ Falling freely/ The feeling of a thousand movements suddenly still/

He said he’ll never again depict bicycles/ Minute curves made many lights dull/ Into morning/ He’s pouring over each individual frame/ 3 panels later the piece became/ What it is today/

Back in Seattle/ Northwest’s saddle/ Steve’s done working/ He straddles the lake path’s rambles/ Got miles turned up with Chet Baker on the way/ Goddamn these Husky fans sure crowd up Montlake/ As he turns up that hill on forty-fifth/ Burning in his legs lets him know he’s still fit/ Prefers this to constraints of his car/ Gets home stows the Bianci in the backyard/ Feet up opens that peanut jar/

Joanna in the city where Steve’s bikes are spinning/ In the plant where this week her hours way past 60/ Used to make Ipads till her friend started feeling shitty/ Now can’t move her hands just turned 15/ Lives on the facility/ Her faculty is limited to assembling the same 4 millimeter part times infinity/ But she remembers when she arrived here on her two wheels/ Proud with work she can provide her own meals

PETER MULLER LIVE LRR

Friday January 27th 2012 is the date of my first show here in Madrid. I will be performing originals tracks featured on the LIFESTYLE, such as Jade Eyes, in addition to covers with some talented vocalists. We are also supplying the PA for the show as well as the microphones and cables. We’re turning a room of the Anglet Cafe in Madrid into our own performance space in Reflection and Response fashion. Anglet Cafe gigs hopefully will be a regular occurrence and feature performances from other local artists and new LRR #Collective members.

Peep the Facebook event page for more info:

http://www.facebook.com/events/283765688343885/

The above flier was finished by V late Monday night. Using only 2 permanent markers, he was able to include a whole array of brushstrokes, from the razor thin border to the block letters of my name, to the central piece of the name of the cafe complete with shadowing and subtle textures. When I ask V to help out with publicity for shows It’s always dope to see what he comes up with.  He included both Spanish and English and threw up the LIFESTYLE along with the info for the gig.

These People Are My People: A Story

The Organ Song/ Tools of the Trade

This week’s original post is a collaboration between V and P. Back in the Basement of the 55thandBrooklyn house in Seattle, P wrote a tune with a story. V later wrote up the lyrics on parchment and together the two pieces “The Organ Song,” and “Tools of the Trade,” become These People Are My People: A Story.

Throwback December: Kickin’ It

Once again, BIG shoutout to all the LIFESTYLE fam for the love since Day 1 back in August. This month, we’re pushin through the end of 2011 with Throwback December: A Retrospective — we’re takin it back to the good ol days, the foundation of the LIFESTYLE. For the next few weeks, we’ll be rediscovering a number of tracks from the P. Muller and Sneaky V archives; The Musical Revolution era, circa 2002-2007. As far back as when we were 14 year old youngsters, we put in countless hours creating music in our makeshift studio, usually taking breaks only for eating globally at local joints, skateboarding at “the Ledge,” and punching the clock at Monterey Market grocery store around the way, with the occasional *extracurriculars. Be on the lookout for original recordings, along with remastered versions, and some 2011 remixes. To kick off this series, we take a look at our old-school sound from “Kickin’ It”… Throw it back! Stay tuned on this RR storytelling session til we hit the new year!

2004.

I slide through a verse/ Smooth like a curse/ Quenches my thirst/ But then I go berserk on ya/ Take joy to destroy ya/ I’ll coy ya/ Don’t know if I’m serious I’ll toy ya

The back room/guest room/laundry room of Peter’s parents’ house in North Berkeley. The setup was basic; what we had was one Boss BR 532 4 track recorder, one Miracle Piano Teaching System (A Midi keyboard with 8 sounds released in 1990. courtesy of Peter’s grandmother), one Fender Stratocaster that we used as a bass using the 4 track recorder’s “bass” setting, and our lyrics:

Kickin It (2004 Original)

Kickin It (2011 Remaster)

P.Muller and Sneaky V/ Hitting it like Chucky D/ P.Muller and Sneaky V/ You can’t touch me

So I went out bombing and the night was fine/ Straight chilling the wine was divine/ Was a crime/ The way we lied/ And made you cry/ But that’s how we do it/ That’s how we do it on the Northside/ Me and Voko going loco/ Chillin with the folk yo/ No smoke yo/ Just yay the Bay/ Where people play/ Hit it every night and everyday

P.Muller and Sneaky V/ Hitting it like Chucky D/ P.Muller and Sneaky V/ You can’t touch me

So!

It’s the end of the week/ Straight 3:15/ Walkin home trippin off e can’t you see/ Almost wanna call your girl up on the phone/ Not bouta be alone now that we’re grown/ Life is perfect/ Gonna make a purchase/ I’ll make you worthless/ I make em surgically remove your brain/ End your pain of being fake and lame/ cuz

P.Muller and Sneaky V/ Hitting it like Chucky D/ P.Muller and Sneaky V/ You can’t touch me

So The Musical Revolution’s taken to the top/ B’s getting popped/ You know we never stop I electrocute/ End disputes with the flows that I hit in my burgundy suit/ I’m a balloon filled up with tunes/ Got the beat V cuz its time to groove/ Lose yourself I’ll make you lose your health/ When I come to your house with my leather belt

P.Muller and Sneaky V/ Hitting it like Chucky D/ P.Muller and Sneaky V/ You can’t touch me

Who rocks the shit/ 06

Who hits your mom/ 06

Who got the niche/ 06

Whose hecka bomb/ North Berkeley

I slide through a verse/ Smooth like a curse/ Quenches my thirst/ But then I go berserk on ya/ Take joy to destroy ya/ I’ll coy ya/ Don’t know if I’m serious I’ll toy ya

P.Muller and Sneaky V/ Hitting it like Chucky D/ P.Muller and Sneaky V/ You can’t touch me

One more time said

P.Muller and Sneaky V/ Hitting it like Chucky D/ P.Muller and Sneaky V/ You can’t touch me
